The Lewisham story

Sitting comfortably?

Our search for more social workers and team managers is part of a bigger story. According to the Audit Commission, Lewisham London Borough Council “is a national leader in its work to understand local people's diverse needs”. A top four-star authority, we’re "improving well", providing "good value for money", and have "high" ethical standards. We’re proud of this recognition – and we want to keep on improving.

Proud to serve.

We serve around 250,000 people through five directorates: Children and Young People, Community Services, Customer Services, Resources, and Regeneration. Our motto is "Salus Populi Suprema Lex". Roughly translated, this means "The Welfare of the People is the Highest Law". We’re adhering to it by achieving positive outcomes for children and young people, the environment, crime, waste collection and recycling.

A different approach.

Unlike most English councils, Lewisham's council is led by a directly-elected mayor. But that’s not the only thing that’s different about us. We like to think we bring an equally democratic approach to the way we work. Our “flat” working structures mean that professionals can draw on each others expertise without worrying too much about hierarchical boundaries.

Easily accessible.

Just seven miles from Westminster and Whitehall, Lewisham is easily accessible by public transport. We have excellent bus and rail links to central London (Charing Cross can be reached in 15 mins). We also have the Docklands Light Railway – and we’re 12 miles from the M25.
